Once you finish your sculpture, and are happy with the result, WAIT before you move to the next phase. Let it dry!
If possible, let it stay outside, in the sun, for a day or two, or even more if you are not in a hurry.
When your air dry clay (Das) sculpture is really dry, you can safely move to the next phase, whatever it might be - sanding, painting, glossing and so on.
Remember to let it dry after each layer of paint or varnish. If you choose to sand it and you reach moist parts in one of the inner layers, which haven't dried yet, let it dry again.
Be patient. That’s the name of the game. If you hurry and paint a semi-dry sculpture, it will not be of high quality.
